Best Fish for Small Dams

Best Fish for Small Dams – South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales

Choosing the right fish for a small dam is critical. In South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales, dams experience warm summers, variable rainfall, and changing water quality. The best results come from hardy native species that tolerate these conditions and perform well with minimal intervention.

This guide applies to dams east of the Great Dividing Range in SE Qld and NE NSW. Other regions have different species requirements, and we can advise on those separately.

Silver Perch

Silver Perch are the most reliable and versatile fish for small dams in this region. They tolerate warm water, variable water quality, and moderate turbidity better than most species. For most small dams, Silver Perch should form the bulk of the stocking

Golden Perch (Yellowbelly)

Golden Perch are suitable for medium to larger small dams. They work well alongside Silver Perch but should be stocked conservatively where space or depth is limited.

Australian Bass

Australian Bass suit dams with reasonable depth, cooler summer water, and structure. They are best used as a secondary species.

Supporting the Natural Food Chain

Small native fish and invertebrates form the base of a healthy dam ecosystem. Including these species improves balance, supports predator growth, and increases long-term stability.

Firetail Gudgeons

Hardy, shallow-water natives that reproduce readily.

Agassiz’s Glassfish

Suited to sheltered areas and add diversity.

Freshwater Shrimp

Assist with organic breakdown and water quality.

Rainbowfish

Active mid and surface species.

Stocking Guide

General guideline is one fish per two square metres of surface area. Avoid over-stocking. For tailored advice, provide postcode, dam size, and depth.
